Zou Bisou Bisou

I already mentioned that Mad Men is currently the best thing on TV. I think it will be long time before another series reaches the levels of character development that the show achieves. One day I will write a full post about Mad Men, but probably I will need some whisky to succeed in this task.

The first episode of season 5 contained a musical piece by Megan Draper, the young second wife of the main character Don Draper, where she sings Zou Bisou Bisou.

Watch it at your own risk – I still get myself singing it from time to time haha

This scene is amazing. Don Draper is so embarrassed that even I felt embarrassed for him. Lane Pryce summarized what Don was feeling by stating that “I saw his soul leave his body”.

Zou Bisou Bisou was originally recorded by Gillian Hills who lived in England but spent many years living in France. This type of music was described as “Yé-Yé” and it became very popular in Europe. The songs used to be interpreted by young girls. Another example of Yé-Yé is France Gall and Poupee De Cire, Poupee De Son.

Well, the style is tacky and the songs are cheesy – but overall charming. These links must be used with care because of how easy it is to get yourself singing Zou Bisou for many weeks.
