Road Trip to Normandy – Day 2 – Rennes, Avranches and Omaha Beach (1/2)

As I mentioned previously, as we could not find a hotel close to Mt Saint Michel, we spent the night at Rennes. There we booked an Etap hotel for the night.

Etap hotels are a very low-cost European chain. Their owners are Accor, the same responsible for Ibis, Novotel and Sofitel. Etap hotels have the minimum necessary for an acceptable night of sleep. It is clean, there is a TV and you don´t have to share a bathroom. There are no frills and it will set you back only €50 a night. The breakfast will cost an extra €5 for some bread, jam, spread cheese, cake, juice and coffee. Reasonable for the price.

The following day when ventured ourselves into Rennes. Rennes is the capital of the region of Brittany with around 200,000 inhabitants.

First we visited Saint George Palace, which is a very nice building with a lovely garden that had many flowers blooming as we are in the beginning of spring – lovely setting for family pictures. We had a walk around in the city, but there was nothing special to see. Ok, Rennes is a beautiful city, but I would not return there for touristic reasons.

We had a great lunch in Rennes. While walking we stopped by this place called “La pommeraie” where we had galettes and crepes. Both the savory and the sweet options where delicious. Me and my girlfriend ordered a caramelized apple with cinnamon crepe that was out of this world!
